In the first of our PR in Focus features, we reflect on the launchpad event for our client, Doncaster University Technical College (UTC).

It was fantastic to be part of the hugely successful launchpad event for Doncaster University Technical College (UTC) last month.

The official launchpad event, which took place at CAST in Doncaster, showcased what the UTC will offer for students across the region and gave young people, their parents and carers the opportunity to find out more.

Doncaster UTC, due to open in September 2020, will be a distinctive school for 13-19 year olds led by employers, The University of Sheffield, and Sheffield Hallam University, to provide an innovative and engaging applied learning environment and unique learning experience. With a core curriculum based around STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) subjects, the UTC specialises in advanced engineering and digital design. It also has the backing of a number of leading employers in Doncaster.

We’ve been working with the team behind the UTC to develop the key channels of communication. So far, this has included creating a robust marketing and student recruitment plan, establishing social media platforms, building general media awareness of the project and providing copy writing for a range of marketing materials.

Charlotte Dimond, director at Sidekick PR said: “It was wonderful to attend the event and see the culmination of everyone’s hard work come together. The turnout was really pleasing with a number of young people and their parents/carers coming along to find out more, as well as seeing all the employer partners showcasing what a career in engineering and digital design could look like.

“We were kept busy organising media interviews, directing the team to capture the videos and photos we needed as well as conducting interviews with those in attendance for social media content.

“It was a really inspiring event and great to know we had been hitting the mark with getting the message out there! There’s still a lot to do but it has been a promising start for everyone involved.

“Over the coming weeks and months we will continue to work with the local, regional and trade media, generate social media content and establish strong networks across the region to help disseminate our messages. In fact, we have a number of exciting announcements from the UTC lined up so watch this space!”
